Interview with Simon - Jim's Antennas in Flagstaff Hill

Eden Exchange recently spoke with Simon, who is a franchisee at Jim’s Antennas in South Australia. Simon discussed with us his franchising and business journey and also provided some unique insights on the Jim’s Antennas business.
Thanks for speaking with us Simon. Can you tell us about your background and career? Why did you get in to franchising and how did you first get involved with Jim’s Antennas?
Not wanting to pursue any of my former career paths I wanted to do something completely different. I’d been self employed before but always relied on staff as part of the business. While support is providede by the Jim's company, with a Jim's Antennas franchise I only had to rely on myself.
A good friend of mine already operated a successful antenna franchise so when the opportunity came along to purchase my own I welcomed it and haven’t looked back since.
What advice do you have for someone looking to run a franchise for the first time? What’s the key message you tell new franchisees?
Being positive is the key. You need to be driven in the early years whilst learning your trade.
In your opinion, what makes for a successful Jim’s Antennas franchise owner?
Someone who is confident, well trained and great with customers.
What type of support does Jim’s Antennas once a new franchisee starts?
Training is provided before you even get out on the road. Training is not just technical but sales related and also day to day help with setting up and running a business. Help is not just from the franchisors as franchisees are on hand to help out their colleagues.
What major industry trends should franchise operators and buyers need be looking out for? What’s your take on where the audio visual home services industry is heading?
IPTV (Internet Protocol television) and security are major issues. Use of data will continue to grow. In short, antennas wont be disappearing overnight.
What challenges have you faced to get the business where it is today? On the other hand, what are some of the key achievements you are proud of?
There are many challenges in running a small business. Cash flow problems, preparing for quieter times. It’s now easy for me to take for granted the work/lifestyle achieved since I’ve started at Jim's Antennas.
What’s the most interesting part of your job? What drives you to do what you do?
I love the home theatre work. I wish I did more of it. The lifestyle and money you can earn from the business is the main driving factor for me.
