Dreaming of becoming a franchisee? Maybe you’ve got your heart set on serving up delicious food to thousands of hungry customers, or you’re someone that wants to make a real difference in your community.
We’ve worked with a range of franchise networks, and spoken to thousands of potential franchisees, learning what they want to know before taking the leap.
Here are some of the things you’ll want to know before making the decision to become a franchisee!
Why should I choose franchising over owning my own business?
Becoming a franchisee comes with a bit more support than when you own your own business. Franchise networks do their best to ensure their franchisees are set up for success, so you’re not left to sink or swim on your own.
When buying into a franchise network, you’ll often receive marketing support, as well as software, equipment, location assistance and ongoing training — all things that can make a real difference to your potential success, as well as your enjoyment of the job.
On the other hand, owning your own private business means you’ve got more autonomy over the day-to-day operations, as well as the trajectory of your business. However, your success or failure is left up to you, which comes with a lot of responsibility (and often stress).
If you’re looking to focus on running your business, while receiving some serious and ongoing support from a network that wants you to succeed, then we recommend becoming a franchisee.
Talk to me about the money. What costs are involved with becoming a franchisee?
Becoming a franchisee comes with a range of benefits, but there are also some expenses you’ll want to factor into your decision-making. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, after all (unless you’re working at a food franchise).
These costs include:
What do I need to know about the Franchising Code of Conduct?
The ACCC’s Franchising Code of Conduct helps both franchisees and franchisors understand their rights and responsibilities, and how the two parties should interact.
The main things it covers are the disclosure of documents, which requires franchisors to hand over any relevant information regarding the health of the franchise network. It also enforces a cooling off period, which gives franchisees 14 days after signing a franchisee agreement to change their mind. Finally, it ensures franchisors operate in good faith, so there is no dishonesty between the franchisor and the franchisee.
